Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella Side Effects

Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella are pills used to prevent pregnancy and reduce the severity of menstrual cycles. When they were first introduced in 2006, they quickly rose to become the best selling birth control pill on the market. Their advertisements promised a new and wide ranging solution to all of the problems a birth control pill could solve. While Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella did work in many of the ways they were supposed to, the drugs also came with a large and wide-ranging number of side effects ranging from minor and insignificant to potentially life-threatening.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

There are a few common side effects that many people using Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella can suffer from. These can include breast pain or tenderness in the breast area, headaches, and heavy non-menstrual vaginal bleeding. Irregular menstrual periods or menstrual periods lasting longer than normal are also frequent.

MORE SEVERE SIDE EFFECTS

One of the side effects resulting from Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella that has gained the most notoriety is the increased risk of blood clots forming. It is estimated that those taking Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella are seven times more likely to develop blood clots than women taking a different type of birth control.

Blood clots can be dangerous. One of the most common types of blood clot that can occur because of these drugs is known as a deep vein thrombosis. This is a condition in which a blood clot forms within a vein that is located deep within the body, oftentimes in the leg. A deep vein thrombosis can cause swelling and pain for anyone suffering from the condition. The blood clot can become more dangerous if it disengages from the vein within the leg and travels to other areas of the body. It poses a significant risk if it reaches the brain or the lungs.

If the blood clot leaves the leg and travels to the lung, it forms a condition known as a pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism can result in serious pain, difficulty breathing and an increased heart rate. If the condition worsens, it has the potential to induce fainting and sometimes death. Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella have been directly linked to many of these dangerous blood clots.

If a blood clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke to occur. When this happens, serious and life-altering changes can happen to a person. Problems such as vision loss, paralysis of one side of the body, slower behavior style, memory loss, and speech and language problems are common changes that can occur if one experiences a stroke.

Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella also have the potential to raise potassium levels in the body. They have been shown to sometimes raise them to levels that are dangerously high. Potassium is essential to the body and the heart to function properly. However, when its levels reach the heights that Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella can initiate, potassium becomes dangerous. At high enough levels it can cause a heart attack, if the levels get higher, it can cause cardiac arrest, which can then lead to death.  Eating anything that contains potassium while taking Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella can greatly increase the risk of suffering from a potassium induced heart attack.

These side effects have become so serious and widespread that many women who used the drugs have filed lawsuits. It is estimated over 11,000 people have sued Bayer regarding its production and marketing of Yaz. They have argued that Yaz presented a flashy and entertaining advertising campaign that did not adequately warn women about the high risks associated with using the drug. Its advertisements presented Yaz as a one stop pill that would solve all of the problems that contraceptives could solve in a more efficient way but failed to mention that Yaz also posed a significant risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.
