Pradaxa is a drug that used to prevent blood clots from forming and help to eliminate the possibility of stroke. Boehringer Ingelheim manufactures Pradaxa and received FDA approval to sell the drug in October 2010. Pradaxa is typically prescribed to patients that do not have heart disease, but are at risk of stroke. Pradaxa works by preventing thrombin, a protein that is used to clot blood in the body, from being activated. This prevents clots from forming in the blood.

Before Pradaxa, Warfarin was the only drug on the market that was used to treat blood clots. It worked in a different way than Pradaxa in that it decreased vitamin k in the blood. Warfarin is a bit more difficult to administer, requires adhering to a strict diet, and has far more side effects than Pradaxa. While there are more side effects associated with Warfarin, it does have an antidote that stops bleeding once it starts. Pradaxa does not have an antidote and because of this can pose serious health risks.

Many people that suffer from a condition known as atrial fibrillation take Pradaxa. Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which the heartbeat is irregular and does not function properly. With an irregular heartbeat, it is possible for blood to clot up in various areas of the heart. When clots form, there is a strong risk that they will spread to other areas of the body through the blood stream. If they spread to the brain, a stroke can occur. Some estimate that the risk of stroke is around five times higher in those people suffering from an atrial fibrillation.

Pradaxa can be prescribed to people at risk of developing a condition known as deep vein thrombosis. This occurs when a blood clot forms deep within the vein of the leg and is common in people who have just undergone hip surgery. This condition can lead to a number of serious issues. If the blood clot dislodges from the leg, it is possible for it to travel throughout the body. If this happens, patients become at risk for both strokes and pulmonary embolisms. A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot gets lodged in one of the veins in the lung. This can lead to serious consequences including both shortness of breath, fainting, and sometimes death.

SIDE EFFECTS

There are a number of side effects associated with Pradaxa. It is common to experience bleeding and bruising from minor cuts and injuries. This is because Pradaxa prevents blood from clotting. Once bleeding starts, it can be difficult to stop.

While small minor amounts of bleeding are common, there have also been more serious and uncontrollable amounts of bleeding associated with Pradaxa. On occasion, it can be impossible to stop bleeding once it starts in people taking Pradaxa. Unlike Warfarin, there is not a known antidote that can be used to stop bleeding.  This severe bleeding that can occur without an antidote has lead to hundred of deaths. Multiple countries have issued safety warnings concerning the use of Pradaxa.

LAWSUITS

Thousands of people have filed lawsuits after their experiences with Pradaxa claiming that there was not a proper amount of warning about the potential risks for severe bleeding associated with the drug. There have been hundreds of deaths as a direct result of Pradaxa. Boehringer Ingelheim announced that it would pay out a sum of $650 million to settle the thousands of cases against it.

Boehringer Ingelheim has stood behind its beliefs that Pradaxa is a safe drug claiming that its benefits outweigh the risks associated with its use. Opponents of Pradaxa claim that the company acted too aggressively in the way in which it marketed Pradaxa and that it failed to properly take into account patient safety. These same opponents argue that Boehringer Ingelheim did not provide sufficient warning about the risk of deadly bleeding that could occur due to the lack of an antidote for Pradaxa. They feel as though Boehringer Ingelheim did this intentionally as a means to sell more drugs and make more money.
