Lipitor is a statin drug that is used to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream for people that have high levels of cholesterol. High cholesterol has been shown to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is a condition that is often attributed to poor diet and exercise practices but that on occasion has been shown to be linked to genetics. There are two types of cholesterol that are found within the body. They are typically referred to as good and bad cholesterol.

Lipitor works by inhibiting the production of a certain enzyme in the liver that is responsible for creating the bad cholesterol. This bad cholesterol can lead to blockages in arteries and veins. When these blockages occur in the heart, it is possible to experience a heart attack. If the blockage happens in the brain, it is possible for a stroke to occur. While Lipitor has shown promise in lowering cholesterol, it does come with a number of side effects including the following:

INCREASED RISK OF TYPE II DIABETES IN WOMEN

A recent study found that those taking Lipitor faced a more than 20 percent greater risk of developing type II diabetes than those taking a placebo, a side effect that was not warned about by Pfizer. This dangerous side effect began to emerge after the drug was introduced to the market in 1996 when in it gained FDA approval. The FDA recently issued a public warning about the potential dangers and the chance of developing type II diabetes after taking the drug.

It is expected that women who are undergoing menopause are at even greater risk. They have a 48 percent higher risk of developing type II diabetes after taking the drug. There is currently little understanding as to why taking Lipitor increases the potential for type II diabetes. Some believe that while taking Lipitor, certain parts of the pancreas that are responsible for regulating insulin may become damaged and cease to function thus resulting in type II diabetes.

There is a great debate right now about whether or not the risks associated with Lipitor outweigh the rewards that come with taking the drug. For many women, type II diabetes poses more potential health risks than high cholesterol and the drug may not be worth taking.

MUSCLE ISSUES

Many people that take Lipitor begin to suffer from muscle pain after using the drug. Lipitor users can also be at a greater risk of muscle injuries and many people report experiencing more muscle injuries than normal while taking the drug. Along with muscle pain, joint pain is a common problem associated with the use of Lipitor. On occasion a condition known as myopathy may develop. This is a condition in which muscles function in an improper way. This can lead to pain and weakness in muscles as well as the darkening of muscle tissue.

LIVER DISEASE

Lipitor is not recommended for those who suffer from liver issues. It is possible that Lipitor may cause damage to the liver and in some cases result in liver failure due to the way in which in acts on the enzymes within the liver.

KIDNEY DAMAGE

Sometimes when muscle damage occurs and muscle tissue dies, it can enter into the blood stream. When this happens, it can cause problems for the kidneys. The kidneys can have trouble eliminating the muscle tissue. If this happens serious kidney damage can occur and on occasion kidney failure is possible.

OTHER SIDE EFFECTS

  • DIARRHEA
  • FEVER
  • COMMON COLD

Medical Compensation for Side Effects
