Low T

Summary

Low T, or low testosterone, is supposed to be another term for hypogonadism, a condition that results from decreasing levels of testosterone in the body. Testosterone is a hormone in the body that is responsible for many masculine features and characteristics. It is what gives men sex drive and also what puts hair on their face and chest.  As men grow, testosterone helps their muscles to develop and also boosts the size of the penis.

Over the past few years, a large number of medications have been advertised as a means of treating Low T. While the companies manufacturing these drugs believe Low T is a serious condition that aging men should seek treatment for, many critics of these companies believe that Low T is a manufactured condition that is not a problem but the result of normal aging.

Around age 40, the amount of testosterone in a man’s body begins to decrease naturally. With lowered amounts of testosterone, men begin to develop a wide variety of symptoms including decreased energy and decreased interest in sex. Hair loss can also be a result of lower levels of testosterone as well as erectile dysfunction.

Critics claim that drug manufacturers created these drugs as a means to counteract a problem that was normal and not actually a problem in order to increase sales and profits. It makes sense that men would want to take a pill to increase energy and sex drive as they age. Big drug companies have used men’s fear of aging to sell more drugs and have barraged them with commercials and advertisements that play on these exact fears. Many doctors believe that Low T does not exist at all. A recent study by CMI/Compass found that more than half of doctors believe that the advertisements for Low T misinformed patients.

An increasing number of men have begun to seek treatment for Low T. It is estimated that 5 percent of men over the age of 60 are currently taking something for the symptoms of Low T.

The worst part about the actions of these drug companies is that the medications they have created to counteract the effects of Low T have the potential to cause significant harm to anyone taking them.  These treatments typically include taking some sort of testosterone in order to increase the levels present in the body. These treatments can be administered via gel that is rubbed on the body, patches, pills, or by an injection.

The drugs that were approved to treat Low T were only approved by the FDA to treat men who have low testosterone as a result of a significant medical condition. This could include something like problems with the testicles or pituitary gland in regulating the amount of testosterone that was produced. It was also approved to treat men with genetic issues and men undergoing chemotherapy.  The FDA did not intend for these drugs to be used as a way for men to counteract some of the effects they experience while aging.

While these treatments can help to improve the effects associated with a decrease in testosterone, they also come with some serious risks. An artificial increase in testosterone has been shown to cause a number of serious and potentially life threatening side effects.

Testosterone can increase the number of red blood cells in the body. With an increased number of red blood cells, the risk of blood clots increases. As more blood clots begin to form, there is an increased risk for a condition known as deep vein thrombosis. This is a condition in which a blood clot forms deep within the leg. This blood clot has the potential to dislodge and travel to other parts of the bod through the bloodstream. When this occurs it is possible that the blood clot could become lodged in a vein within the lung.

This is known as a pulmonary embolism and can be a potentially life threatening condition. The clot in the lung can cause a decrease in blood flow that results in a decrease of blood reaching the lung. Common symptoms can include difficult breathing and a faster heart rate. In some occasions fainting can occur and sometimes death is possible.

It is possible for men taking prescription testosterone to suffer from heart attack and stroke as well due to the increased number of blood clots that can occur because of testosterone. By taking artificial testosterone, men also increase their risk of developing prostate cancer.

The amount of artificial testosterone being prescribed and sold is expected to continue to grow. Artificial testosterone has become a multibillion-dollar industry that shows no signs of stopping in the near future.
