What is Uterine Fibroids Removal Surgery?

Uterine fibroids removal surgery is the process of removing uterine fibroids from a woman’s body. Uterine fibroids are benign lumps that grow in the uterus. They do not usually cause any problems and many women can live with them without experiencing any harmful side effects. However, in some cases fibroids can lead side effects that require them to be removed. These can include heavy uterine bleeding, pain associated with the fibroids, or if the fibroids begin to affect one’s ability to get pregnant.

In the past fibroids were treated by performing either a uterine fibroids hysterectomy, uterine fibroid embolization surgery, or performing a uterine fibroids endometrial ablation. Another option was to remove the fibroids themselves by making small lacerations to the fibroids and cutting it into pieces then removing those pieces through a small incision in the skin. This process is known as power morcellation.

Power Morcellation is  a medical procedure in which a gynecologist utilizes a morcellator to remove fibroids or the entire uterus. Morcellators allow doctors to make tiny incisions rather than large cuts that result in a quicker healing time and less pain and strife than is associated with usual surgery.

Uterine Fibroids Removal Side Effects

There are a few side effects associated with uterine fibroid removal surgery. It is possible that infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes can occur. Scar tissue can form following the surgery which lead to complications. In rare cases, this scar tissue can cause infertility in some women. It is also possible for these scars to rupture during pregnancy or delivery due to the added pressure associated with the pregnancy on the uterus.

A more serious side effect that has been recently discovered is the spread of cancer cells present in the uterus to other areas of the body. It is possible when the surgery occurs that all of the fibroid tissue will get removed. If there are cancer cells present in the uterus, and they are not removed during the procedure, the cancer can spread to other parts of the body. While the cancer cells are initially benign, after moving to other areas they can form dangerous and deadly tumors.

While women are usually screened for cancer prior to receiving uterine fibroid removal surgery, it is possible to miss some types of cancer. One form known as uterine sarcoma can look similar in appearance to the benign uterine fibroids. Uterine sarcoma is difficult to diagnose or detect before the surgery. If the cancer is not detected before the surgery, it will likely spread. This has lead to many women being diagnosed after the surgery when the hidden cancer has already spread to other parts of the body. Studies show that this spreading can decrease the survival rate of people with uterine sarcoma from 50 percent to less than 10 percent. It is suspected that one of every 350 women that undergo a power morcellation surgery will have uterine sarcoma.

Uterine Fibroids Removal Surgery Lawsuits

The discovery of the increased risk of spreading cancer following surgery has lead to a number of lawsuits being filed against manufacturers of the power morcellators. The FDA has warned against the use of power morcellators due to the great risk associated with the spread of cancer and the number of women that are likely to have uterine sarcoma.

One of the cases that has gained significant attention is that of Dr. Amy Reed. She is an anesthesiologist who was diagnosed with serious cancer following a surgery involving a power morcellator. She was pre-screened for cancer before the surgery and none was detected. Since being diagnosed, she has been active in attempting to stop the use of power morcellators in any gynecological procedures.

Medical Compensation for Side Effects

Lawsuits can be filed against the makers of the power morcellator for developing a product that endangered patients. If you developed cancer after undergoing a surgery involving a power morcellator, please request a free, no obligation case evaluation.
