Stay Safe While Shoveling Snow

Although the holiday season is nearing an end, the winter wonderland might be lingering for a while. Snow shoveling is a difficult task that can result in back and shoulder injuries if proper precautions aren’t taken. Follow these steps recommended by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to stay safe while shoveling:

Check with your doctor before picking up the shovel. Some people who have medical conditions or difficulty exercising should consider hiring someone to complete the job for them. If you receive the go-ahead, make sure to clear snow early and often—clearing heavy, packed snow can be far more grueling.

Use a shovel that is appropriate for your height and strength. Try to push the snow with the shovel, as opposed to lifting it. If you must lift, squat with your legs apart and straighten your legs, without bending at the waist. This puts less pressure on your back. Never throw snow over your shoulder and to the side, since this requires a dangerous twisting motion.

Most importantly, pace yourself and take frequent breaks to replenish fluids. As in all physical activities, take care to notice signs of dehydration and physical exhaustion.
