Use Your Diet to Boost Your Immunity

With flu season in full swing and increased concerns this year associated with the spread of the potentially deadly H1N1 influenza outbreak, you and your loved ones may be looking to boost your bodies’ immunity in order to fend off the nasty flu bugs. The good news is, you don’t have to go to the pharmacy to get what you need.

A trip to the grocery store can provide all you need to crank up your immunity and increase the chances you won’t get sick. There also are foods you should avoid to stay healthy, according to health experts cited in an MSNBC.com report.

Immunity Boosters

These foods pack plenty of vitamins and other immunity boosters and should be part of your plan to eat your way to health:

• Orange juice

• Milk

• Yogurt

• Oats and barley

• Chicken soup

• Fish and shellfish

• Garlic

• Wheat germ

• Mushrooms

• Black tea

• Pumpkin

• Sweet potatoes

Immunity Killers

Unlike the immunity boosters, the following foods will not help fortify your body against the flu and other infections and should be avoided:

• High-calorie foods

• Soda

• Excess alcohol
