Treating Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s foot is an uncomfortable condition that caused by a fungus called dermatophytes. The fungus seeps into the dead skin cells in the outside layers of the foot. This fungus is particularly at home in a sweaty shoe. It is possible to get athlete’s foot in other areas of the body that are in close, moist environments much of the time.

In its early stages, athlete’s foot causes a scaly appearance to the skin of the feet, particularly the webbing between toes. At first, there is no pain or odor. As the fungal infection progresses, an intense itching occurs. The soles of the feet can blister and become red and inflamed. The scaling skin of the feet can become white or seem waterlogged, or it may crack and ooze in places.

It’s important if you’re treating athlete’s foot that you rule out any other causes it could have. Itchy, scaling feet can be a result of eczema. Discomfort can also be caused by tight shoes without proper ventilation or an allergic reaction to a product like nail polish.

Treatment usually involves a topical antifungal agent like clotrimazole or terbinafine cream. These treatments can be self-administered at home and are often available over the counter. In severe cases, prescription oral antifungal medication may be necessary. If your doctor prescribes oral antifungal medication to treat your athlete’s foot, ensure you are aware of the side effects which can be severe.

In the case of soggy white toe webs resulting from athlete’s foot, an at-home foot soak may be in order. Soak the feet in a solution of aluminum subacetate (30% aqueous aluminum chloride) for half an hour twice daily.

To prevent athlete’s foot, try to keep your feet as dry as possible and wear socks with absorbent fibers, especially when exercising. In moist weather, opt for bare feet when it is possible and safe. Try to wear sandals if you are using a public shower, where athlete’s foot famously abounds.
