Summertime Activities for Grown Ups

An internet search for summer activities will pull up a myriad of possibilities…for children mostly. But for those adults who want to enjoy their summers without kids, there are plenty of budget friendly alternatives to cruises and beach vacations.

Remember when you were a kid and just wanted to stay up late watching movies? Well, you’re a grown up now! Why not host a movie marathon that lasts all weekend? Invite some friends, order some pizza, have a couple of beers if you like as well. You could follow a series such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, or devote your marathon to a particular genre or actor. If you really want to get involved, costumes are always an option.

You can also get to know your neighbors by hosting a potluck or barbeque. Food is a time honored method to create instant atmosphere and friendly feelings. Ask your guests to bring a dessert, bottle of wine, or an idea for a game and get to know the people you share your street with.

And nothing brings out the competitive edge like having a cooking competition. Challenge a friend or neighbor to a pancake contest for Saturday brunch, or see who can invent the best pie without using a recipe. Have an impartial judge on hand and a prize for the winner, such as a gift certificate to the movies or for a pedicure. Maybe they’ll even invite you to come along.

On a rainy day, you can always do some research on basic feng shui principles and rearrange a room you don’t particularly like being in. You’ll be surprised how different it feels, and maybe you’ll even find a forgotten piece of artwork to hang.
