JUST REPORTED:

Certain Gel-Filled Teethers Recalled

Luv N’ Care Ltd. of Monroe, La., is recalling an infant teething product due to concerns about its contaminated gel filling. All gel-filled teethers with the brand names “Nuby,” “Cottontails” and “Playschool” are being pulled off shelves because the FDA detected Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus circulans bacteria in the gel.

Although consuming the gel inside the products typically does not prompt illness, the company expressed concern for infants’ health. The filling can cause adverse reactions in children with weakened immune systems. Diarrhea, stomach pain and vomiting may occur when the gel is consumed.

To date, no illnesses have been reported blaming the recalled items. The FDA urged consumers who have the teethers to immediately cease use and discard or return them for a full refund. The products were distributed nationwide at various retail outlets, as well as online.
