Eating for your Skin

You hear it from a young age, “Don’t eat that! You’ll get pimples!” Foods like pizza, soda, and chocolate have all been accused of causing acne due to their fat and sugar content. Actually, studies have shown that diet has virtually nothing to do with the causes of acne. The real culprits are often hormones, genetics, and stress.

Of course, your skin is your body’s largest organ, so common sense dictates that what is good for our bodies will be good for our skin. While fatty, sugary foods won’t doom you to a lifetime of acne, they are still unhealthy. When your body is running on sub-par fuel, it shows in the quality of your skin, your digestion, and your energy level.

There are some foods actually promote healthy, glowing skin. Sulfur, essential for the production of collagen, has proven to be very effective at treating acne when applied topically as well as ingested through raw foods. Foods high in sulfur include radish greens, broccoli, asparagus, kale, and pumpkin seeds.

In fact, the more raw foods you eat, the more you will likely see an improvement in your skin. Even if you’ve never experienced acne, raw foods enhance the “glow” you get from eating well and drinking plenty of water. The power of sufficient hydration should never be underestimated, as it is essential for ridding the body of toxins and maintaining healthy cells.
