EWG Selects Best Sunscreens, Urges FDA to Action

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently conducted a study of 838 name-brand sunscreens and found evidence that one of every eight fail to adequately protect skin from damaging UVA radiation. The study ranked products by effectiveness, factoring in UVA protection, UVB protection, stability in the sun, and health hazard (safety) ratings for all ingredients.

Among the top ten sunscreens the EWG recommends are Soleo/Wyland Sunscreen Organic Chemical Free Sunscreen SPF 30+, Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen UVA/UVB Broad Spectrum, 30+, and California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance, SPF 30+.

The EWG urges the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to set mandatory sunscreen safety standards and approve new, effective and safe sunscreens for use in the United States. According to the EWG, over 70% of sunscreens on the market today bear claims that the FDA considers unacceptable or indicative of a misbranded product. A full summary of the research can be found at the EWG’s Cosmetic Safety Database.
